The term Web 2.0 is exciting imaginations of people thinking about the internet everywhere. Since November 2006, United Planet makes an element of “Web 2.0” available to company intranets as well, with the Wiki element. The new release of the Intrexx Xtreme portal development platform makes it possible to operate a knowledge database in an unstructured form. This allows employees, similarly to the popular Wikipedia website, to collect their own ideas and experiences, then comment and supplement each other’s work.

In addition to the wiki function, the new release offers advances in the areas of application and data integration: this allows system care to be more effectively designed, the integration of data from SAP systems to be made easier, and user administration to be refined.

A wiki is a collection of pages that can not only be read by users, rather, the pages can be changed online as well. In this, wikis resemble content management systems, whereby individual pages and articles of a wiki are connected to one another by cross-references (links). The name comes from “wikiwiki”, the Hawaiian word for “quick”. With the ability to change individual pages by anyone, an original and previously thought unattainable idea of the World Wide Web has been realized: Individual persons will be networked with one another and, in this way, can generate an enormous pool of knowledge together as a community. This can now be used by businesses with the help of the new release of Intrexx.

Within Intrexx 3.1, wikis are implemented as follows: The Wiki is an option for text fields, which can be combined with all other controls in Intrexx. This allows applications with structured data fields, like selection lists, to be combined with unstructured data models like wikis. The information can also be placed in relation to any kind of application in a portal, or controlled by the Process Manager in Intrexx. In the same way, it is possible to generate automated requests to authors of wikis, in order to (for example) make sure the article’s contents are up-to-date after a specific amount of time has passed. The combination of unstructured collections of data and defined policies and requests makes sense for businesses, as generally a large amount of users do not continually check the contents, as with Wikipedia, as well as the necessity of correctness in business information being higher.

The new release, Intrexx Xtreme 3.1, is available since November 2006. Customers without a Software Service Contract can contact their advisor, depending on license price. Interested parties can download the software here to try it out.
