“Who knows what?” – Using the portal to benefit from employee knowledge

The “Handwerkskammer” [Chamber of Skilled Trades and Businesses] of the Stuttgart area is responsible for the approx. 30,000 trades businesses in the region of Stuttgart. The services offered by the Chamber of Skilled Trades and Businesses comprise legal, business, technical and training matters, as well as political representation and effective public relations activities promoting trades.

Requirements

The Chamber was looking for a solution to replace its old Intranet. It was to ensure that all employees could be supplied with the information and documents important for their work. In addition to that, the knowledge of individual employees was to be put to beneficial use, so that employees could enter information in the system themselves and make it available to their colleagues.

Solution

After evaluating several solutions, the Chamber finally opted for setting up an information portal using the platform-independent standard software, Intrexx, which had won over the responsible IT managers particularly because it is easy to use and has diverse possibilities for assigning reading and writing authorization. The low licence costs and the simple creation of applications with Intrexx also influenced their decision. Given that there was hardly any programming required when the new company portal was introduced and that the old Intranet could be integrated without any problems, the portal was implemented within only 14 days. In the "Who knows what?" application, employees can now enter personal strengths and knowhow that goes beyond the purely technical. Employees have the option of recording foreign languages they speak, hobbies, IT knowledge, specialised knowledge or methodological skills on the portal. Moreover, important Chamber documents, such as service agreements, guidelines or target agreements, are managed in a unified and clear structure on the Chamber's information portal. In addition to that, the portal supplies the Chamber's employees with the most up-to-date news on a daily basis.
